Couples Therapy for Parents and Parents-To-Be

Prenatal and postpartum couples therapy is a very popular service at The Well Parents Centre and for very good reason: The reproductive stages can be very taxing on relationships.

For couples contemplating starting a family, issues related to readiness, roles and responsibilities, and differing expectations can emerge.

For couples trying to conceive, the emotional and sexual intimacy of a couple can be put to the test, especially when the couple does not get pregnant right away.

For couples coping with infertility and loss, resentment can grow when partners cope differently from each other and/or they may miss meeting each other’s emotional needs.

For couples going through pregnancy, relationships can be tested when they do not feel supported by each other, they do not seem to share the same emotional experience, or when the increasing stress creates conflict or distance between them.

For couples going through the postpartum phase, partners may go through a beautiful experience together and at the same time, they can grow apart through lack of time and connection, or face increased conflict due stress, sleep deprivation, and mismatch in expectations (to name just a few factors).

For couples in the early parenting years and beyond, couples may need help rebuilding connection and intimacy, rebalancing household and parenting responsibilities, getting on the same page in terms of parenting.

Couples therapy helps couples to communicate more effectively, to listen to the other rather than respond defensively, and to increase emotional safety, connection, and intimacy.

We offer virtual and in-person couples therapy for couples who are committed to improving their relationship. To learn more or to book your first session, email us at info@wellparentscentre.com or fill out our contact form.

A great book recommendation for navigating postpartum relationships is And Baby Makes Three by Dr. John Gottman and Dr. Julie Schwartz Gottman.
