How To Choose The Best Therapist For You

With so many great therapists at The Well Parents Centre, it can be overwhelming to choose who to work with. When you contact the clinic, you will hear back personally from one of the clinic co-founders, Dr. Samantha Waxman or Dr. Jillian Satin, who are happy to answer any questions.

We can walk you through the following considerations, either by email or phone.

1)    Therapist availability: We strive to keep low wait times for our services (approximately 1-2 weeks), which means that we will try to connect you to the therapist with the earliest availability who is the best fit for you. We can also place you on a waitlist if there is a therapist you would like to wait for.

2)    Provider type: Our therapy team includes psychologists, social workers, and psychotherapists. Though they have different educational and training backgrounds, all are highly trained, experienced, and passionate about perinatal and general mental health. A chart that compares the education, training, and scope of practice across different types of mental health practitioners can be found here. Of note, psychologists are the only therapists on our team who can provide a mental health diagnosis, so you will want to keep that in mind if that is important to you. A practical consideration is to find out which type of provider(s) is covered under your particular insurance plan's extended health benefits.

3)    Problem areas: All the therapists at The Well Parents Centre are highly trained to work with depression and anxiety through different reproductive stages (pregnancy anxiety and depression, postpartum anxiety and depression). However, there are some clinicians with additional training and expertise in other presenting issues. We recommend specifying if you are seeking help for specific issues in order to find the best therapist for you. Examples include body image/eating disorders history, trauma-related challenges, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic attacks, pain, emotion regulation, parenting challenges.

 4)    Fit: We know that therapy success is largely determined by the connection you have with your therapist. For this reason, all of our therapists offer complimentary 10 minute phone calls for you to ask questions about their practice and to make sure it feels like a good fit for you.
